Peter Hiemstra (born 1954) trained at the ABK Minerva in Groningen where he was taught by ceramicist Kees van Renssen. He works primarily with ceramic materials to create his visual narratives. They are not straightforward forms, but scenes or events. The visual narratives often balance between witty and bizarre, sincere and vulnerable with a poetic touch and a touch of humor. His world responds to its own laws, values, and truths. “It doesn’t have to be right, as long as it’s credible”. He often expresses his amazement at human behavior, which often exceeds our limited imagination. He makes the unimaginable tangible and the intangible visible. This creates image that transcend ordinary, everyday existence.

Zijn wereld beantwoord aan eigen wetten, waarden en waarheden. “Het hoeft niet te kloppen als het maar geloofwaardig is”. Hij spreekt vaak zijn verbazing uit over het menselijk handelen dat regelmatig ons beperkte voorstellingsvermogen te boven gaat. Hiemstra maakt het onvoorstelbare aanschouwelijk en het ongrijpbare tastbaar. Zo ontstaan beelden die zich onttrekken aan het gewone, alledaagse bestaan.
